'Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Chose the Ideal Weekend for Its Theatrical Release

Two years ago, Universal and Blumhouses Five Nights at Freddys demonstrated that Generation Z still had a strong appetite for cinema, contrary to Hollywoods recent concerns. Fans had simply been waiting for the right film to return to theaters. The original FNAF opened to a record $80 million, eventually grossing $137.2 million domestically and $291.4 million worldwide, joining the ranks of successful video game adaptations like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Now, its sequel, Five Nights at Freddys 2, is set to hit theaters. The timing couldnt be more strategic: the post-Thanksgiving weekend is typically quiet for wide releases, squeezed between holiday blockbusters. But a dedicated fanbase, primarily Gen Z with younger millennials, ensures that FNAF 2 could thrive in this slot.

The first films box office mirrored the performance of recent anime hits such as Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, featuring a strong opening weekend followed by rapid drop-offs. Both films catered mainly to their existing fanbases rather than appealing to broad audiences. However, a passionate following combined with a modest budget often guarantees success, which is precisely the case for FNAF 2.

Compared to high-budget films like Furiosa: A Mad Max Story and Predator: Badlands, which relied on small but devoted fan groups, FNAF 2 comes with a more manageable $51 million budget. Box office projections suggest a $40 million opening would already be a win for Blumhouse. Given the popularity of the first installment, theres potential for the sequel to exceed expectations, possibly approaching the $80 million debut of its predecessor.

Fans of video game franchises have historically shown strong loyalty to faithful adaptations, as seen with the Sonic series. While FNAF 2 may not have the broad family appeal of those films, its dedicated audience could ensure a turnout comparable to the first movie. Being PG-13 and offering Goosebumps-style horror for younger viewers, it remains highly appealing to its core demographic.

The post-Thanksgiving weekend has traditionally been reserved for niche or specialty releases, such as Violent Night in 2022, rather than blockbuster launches. This year, offerings include Bleecker Streets Fackham Hall, Sony Pictures Classics Merrily We Roll Along, and Lionsgates re-cut Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. However, as Godzilla Minus One demonstrated last year, early December can be ideal for films like FNAF 2. With Wicked: For Good still performing strongly, Universal has the chance to finish 2025 on a high note with this sequel.
