Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain have declared they will not take part in next years Eurovision Song Contest after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) confirmed Israels eligibility to compete. The announcement came shortly after the EBU stated that no vote would be held on excluding Israel, despite calls from several countries for such a measure.
Critics of Israels involvement cite its military actions in Gaza, which have reportedly resulted in at least 70,125 deaths, and accusations of unfair influence in last years contest to favor its own entrant.
In its statement clearing Israel to participate, the EBU highlighted that members endorsed reforms to reinforce trust and protect [the] neutrality of the competition. Among the changes is the reintroduction of a larger professional jury during the semifinals, aimed at reducing political or governmental influence over voting.
The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS stated that participating under the current circumstances would conflict with the organizations core public values. It also referenced Israels alleged interference in last years contest and concerns over press freedom violations during the Gaza conflict.
RTE, Irelands national broadcaster, cited the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and humanitarian crisis as its reason for withdrawing from Eurovision 2026. Slovenias broadcaster emphasized its decision was made on behalf of the 20,000 children who died in Gaza. Similarly, Spains RTVE announced it would skip the contest in Vienna, highlighting that political use of the competition and ongoing tensions in Gaza threaten Eurovisions neutrality, according to its secretary-general, Alfonso Morales.
Not all nations oppose Israels participation. Germany, for example, indicated it would withdraw only if Israel were excluded. German Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer affirmed, Israel belongs in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog welcomed the EBUs confirmation, asserting that Israel, which claims to face a global smear campaign, deserves to be represented on every stage around the world.
