Gavin Newsom Responds to Halle Berry's Harsh Criticism: 'She Wasn't Aware'

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) addressed comments made by Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry, who recently criticized him during a public event. The interaction occurred shortly after Berry spoke at the New York Times DealBook Summit, where she sharply questioned Newsoms record and future political ambitions.

At the event, Berry expressed frustration over the governors repeated veto of a bill concerning menopause care, saying, Back in California, my governor, Gavin Newsom, has vetoed our menopause bill two years in a row. But thats okay, because he wont be governor forever, and by overlooking women, he probably shouldnt be our next president either.

The legislation, AB 432, aimed to require specific menopause-related medical support and additional professional training. Despite its veto in October for the second consecutive year, Newsom emphasized that he intends to incorporate the bill into next years budget.

Speaking to reporters at Newark International Airport in New Jersey, Newsom commented on Berrys remarks: Were reconciling that. Ive included it in the budget next year. She didnt know that. The governor noted that he has been in contact with Berrys management to clarify the situation.

A spokesperson for Newsom previously explained the veto, stating that the bill in its current form would have unintentionally increased healthcare costs for millions of working women, which the administration aimed to avoid. Nevertheless, the governor expressed interest in revisiting the legislation in 2026.

It remains uncertain whether Berrys public criticism will influence the bills progress, but Newsoms team appears committed to addressing the concerns raised by the actress and other advocates.
