'No More F**ks Given' Halle Berry Shocks Summit Crowd by Criticizing Gavin Newsom for 'Devaluing' Women

During Wednesdays New York Times DealBook summit, Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry took the stage and delivered a bold critique of California Governor Gavin Newsom. At this point in my life, I have zero concern left for holding back, Berry stated candidly.

Berry, 59, centered her remarks on the need for broader healthcare access specifically targeting menopause. She highlighted that a bill she supported, which would require certain menopause care in health plans and improve professional training, has been vetoed twice in California.

In my home state of California, Governor Gavin Newsom has blocked our menopause legislation, not once, but twice, Berry said. But thats not the end. By undervaluing women, who make up half the population, he demonstrates why he may not be fit for higher office either. Her direct mention of Newsom prompted audible reactions from the audience.

The legislation in question, AB 432, introduced by Assemblywoman Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, was vetoed a second time in October. A representative for Newsom explained that the veto was due to concerns over rising healthcare costs. The bill, as drafted, could have inadvertently increased healthcare expenses for millions of working women, which we aim to prevent, said Newsom spokesperson Izzy Gardon. Gardon added that efforts to pass the legislation remain ongoing.

Berry continued to speak about the broader challenges facing women in midlife. In 2025, there is still much to explore and address, especially for women navigating midlife and considering long-term health. Women like me are often overlooked, she said. At 59, society treats me as past my prime. Women my age often face invisibility in Hollywood, at work, and online.
