George Clooney has opened up about his experience filming the pilot episode of the iconic medical drama ER, a role that propelled him to widespread fame.
Playing the charismatic Dr. Doug Ross, Clooney became an instant heartthrob and gained recognition that helped launch his successful film career. Speaking on Live With Kelly & Mark on December 5, the 64-year-old actor recalled the early days of the show:
"It was a two-hour pilot," Clooney said. "And I got to know all the people who ended up becoming very dear friends Tony Edwards, Julianna Margulies, Noah Wyle ... we all became a family."
He continued, reflecting on the show's unexpected ratings triumph: "And then the show aired and at the time there were two hospital shows coming on Thursday night, at the same time. One of them was Chicago Hope and one of them was ER. And Chicago Hope was supposed to beat us, but we doubled them. Overnight, there was that moment you realize ... 'I've got a job for a year. It's like, a miracle. I've got a job for a year.' And then, it worked out."
ER premiered on NBC in 1994 and ran for 15 seasons, concluding in 2009. Created by Michael Crichton, the series also featured Sherry Stringfield, Eriq La Salle, and Noah Wyle. Clooney departed at the end of season 5 in 1999 but returned for guest appearances in season 6 and the series finale.
Over the years, Clooney has maintained close connections with his former co-stars. In April, he reunited with Margulies, Edwards, and Wyle during the opening night of the stage adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck. Later in October, Margulies praised Clooney for taking on Broadway, sharing that she emailed him: "Im so proud of you. You dont have to do this."
The former ER stars still exchange personal emails signed playfully as 'Love, Carol' and 'Doug,' reflecting the lasting bond formed during the series.
