Jelly Roll Trades Drinking and Cocaine for Running on His Birthday

Country artist Jelly Roll marked his 41st birthday by prioritizing his health over old habits. On the morning of December 4, he posted a video on Instagram showing himself running alongside his friend, bowhunter Cameron Hanes.

Its my 41st birthday, and Im not saying that for gifts, Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, said in the video. I used to drink, do cocaine, and take codeine on my birthdays. Now, one of my best friends wakes me up to go for a run. Me and Cam Hanes are getting these miles in.

He reflected on his journey, saying, This is what God can do for you over the years. If you didnt enjoy your birthday this year, you can change it by the next one. I promise you can.

Hanes also shared the moment, noting that they were completing a 5K together. Jelly Roll emphasized the shift in his lifestyle, adding, I used to do drugs on my birthday. I changed my friend group. Now I run. Hanes commented, Hes made me better too. Surround yourself with people who lift you up.

The singer has been open about his history with addiction, revealing he first faced drug-related charges at age 14. In 2023, he shared, Ive made peace with my past. It still haunts me, but I dont think about doing drugs anymore.

Since 2002, Jelly Roll has transformed his health, losing nearly 200 pounds from his previous weight of 550 lbs. His dedication to exercise and nutrition led him to running, and he completed his first 5K in 2024. Earlier this year, he founded the "Losers Run Club" while preparing for a second 5K race.

He also revealed a new personal goal during a podcast appearance in December 2024, stating he aims to appear on the cover of Men's Health by March 2026, marking his first public declaration of this ambition and highlighting his desire for a major transformation.
