Jessie J explains breaking Royal Protocol to embrace Kate Middleton during their cancer journeys

Singer Jessie J has revealed why she decided to embrace Kate Middleton at the Royal Variety Performance, choosing compassion over strict royal protocol. The moment highlighted a shared connection between the two women, who have both been public about their cancer experiences.

In a discussion on the U.K. program This Morning on December 3, the 37-year-old singer reflected on the encounter with the Princess of Wales, 43, which took place at the November 19 event in London. Jessie explained that despite being advised against physical contact, she felt compelled to offer support as a fellow mother who has faced cancer.

I was briefed not to, but I just saw a mom that has also gone through cancer publicly, and I wanted to give her a hug, Jessie said. I didnt see her just as the Princess of Wales. I asked her, Can I give you a hug? and she welcomed it.

She added, I told her, Its inspiring. I know some of the difficult days shes been through, and I wanted to offer a hug mom to mom, human to human.

This appearance marked Princess Kates first red carpet outing with Prince William in two years. She had significantly reduced her royal duties in 2024 while undergoing cancer treatment. In March 2024, she shared in a video message that she was receiving chemotherapy following a planned abdominal surgery in January. She completed chemotherapy in September 2024 and announced remission in early 2025.

Jessie J herself disclosed a breast cancer diagnosis in June, sharing updates about her mastectomy and a postponed second surgery on social media. During her This Morning interview, she shared that she is feeling well and reflected on the positive changes the experience has brought to her life.

Its been a chance to show that even in hard times, you keep moving forward, Jessie said. Ive had meaningful time with my mom, Im more present as a parent, and Ive connected deeply with friends who have taken health checks because of these conversations.

She continued, I would never have expected to find a lump and face cancer, but it happened. I faced it with positivity, and Im grateful my treatment path didnt require chemotherapy. My journey was straightforward in the best possible way.
