Jessie J Reflects on Discussion With Kate Middleton About Their Cancer Struggles: ‘I Understand You, and I Empathize’

Though their worlds are vastly different, Jessie J and Kate Middleton connected on a deeply personal level at the Royal Variety Performance in London last November, finding common ground in their experiences with cancer and motherhood. In a Good Morning America interview that aired Friday, Dec. 5, the singer opened up about their meaningful conversation.

Jessie J recalled Middletons words: She simply said, Thank you, I know youve had a difficult journey. I responded, I know you have as well.

The singer continued, explaining her own response: Mum to mum, cancer survivor to cancer survivor, I see you, and I feel you. Can I give you a hug? Middleton welcomed it, replying, Of course you can.

This exchange comes roughly six months after Jessie J, who has a young son with partner Chanan Safir Colman, revealed her breast cancer diagnosis. She underwent surgery in June and soon returned to the hospital with complications from an infection. By July, she confirmed the cancer had not spread, sharing the news with her supporters. However, she had to delay her fall tour due to a second surgery.

Reflecting on her journey, Jessie told GMA, I know theres a chance it could come back, but until then, were living life.

Kate Middleton, who announced in March 2024 that she was receiving treatment for an unspecified cancer, completed chemotherapy six months later and entered remission. Understanding the challenges of facing cancer publicly while raising children, Middletons experience resonated with Jessie J.

Despite being advised against physical contact at the Royal Variety Performance, Jessie shared on This Morning that she couldnt resist giving Middleton a hug. I just saw a mom that has also gone through cancer publicly, and I wanted to hug her. It was as simple as that. I didnt see her as the Princess of Wales in that moment; I saw a fellow mother, she said.

Jessie added, It was about human to human, mom to mom.
