Jessie J Reveals Details of Emotional Encounter with Kate Middleton Despite Breaking Royal Protocol

During the Royal Variety Performance in November, Jessie J embraced Princess Kate Middleton, an action that subtly broke royal protocol. The "Bang Bang" singer later shared the emotional exchange in an interview with Good Morning America.

The connection between the two appeared to stem from shared experiences as mothers and survivors of cancer. Jessie J, navigating her own breast cancer journey, found comfort in forming a bond with the Princess of Wales.

"She just said, 'Thank you, I know youve gone through a tough time,'" Jessie J recounted. "I said, 'I know you have too.'"

Reflecting on the moment, Jessie J added, "I wanted to acknowledge that, mum to mum, cancer survivor to cancer survivor. I see you, and I feel you." Despite being advised not to initiate physical contact, she asked Middleton for a hug, to which the princess warmly responded, "Of course you can." Jessie J expressed gratitude for Middletons understanding, noting the hug was received as intended.

While royal protocol typically discourages initiating contact with members of the royal family, exceptions have become more common in recent years. Jessie J announced her cancer diagnosis in June 2024 and underwent a mastectomy the same month. Kate Middleton shared her own diagnosis in March 2024, underwent chemotherapy, and announced remission in January 2025.

"It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery," Middleton wrote. "Adjusting to a new normal takes time, but I look forward to a fulfilling year ahead with much to anticipate. I am grateful for everyones support."
