Before becoming a household name with his CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, Ray Romano was a stand-up comedian trying to find his big break in Hollywood. In the mid-'90s, he briefly landed a supporting role on a network comedy, but he was dismissed from the show before filming the pilot. In an unexpected twist, his replacement was another comedian, Joe Rogan, who would later become a media powerhouse.
The Early Days of "NewsRadio"
The two comedians paths crossed on NBCs NewsRadio, which debuted as a midseason replacement in 1995. The show centered around the chaotic life at a New York City news radio station, starring Dave Foley as the stations news director. The ensemble cast included Phil Hartman, Maura Tierney, and Andy Dick. Romano initially secured the role of Rick, an electrician, but after a couple of rehearsals, he was let go.
Romano later reflected on the firing, explaining it was due to a mismatch of comedic styles. He admitted he sensed early on that the part wasnt a perfect fit. Greg Lee briefly filled the role in the pilot, but the producers soon cast Joe Rogan as the conspiracy-prone handyman, Joe, starting from the second episode.
A Career Turning Point
NewsRadio ran for five seasons and gained a devoted following. Rogan stayed with the show for its entire run, using the role as a stepping stone to greater fame. For Romano, missing out on NewsRadio proved fortuitous. In 1996, his sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond premiered and became a massive success, running for nine seasons and earning him multiple Emmys. It established Romano as a major figure in television comedy.
Rogan leveraged NewsRadio to expand his career into hosting and commentary, including work with UFC and Fear Factor, eventually launching The Joe Rogan Experience, one of the most influential podcasts in modern culture. He has expressed happiness about the career paths both he and Romano followed, calling NewsRadio a valuable experience that helped him grow in show business while continuing his stand-up career.
Ultimately, the swap on NewsRadio benefited both comedians, giving each the platform they needed to reach iconic status in entertainment.
