Kate Winslet says Helen Mirren broke her rule to star in her film

Dame Helen Mirren set aside her usual rules for selecting roles to appear in Kate Winslets new movie, according to the actress and director herself. Winslet, 50, both directed and acted in the holiday film Goodbye June, which was written by her son Joe Anders. The story revolves around four siblings whose lives are deeply affected when their mothers health declines during the festive season.

Appearing on the BBC program The Graham Norton Show, Winslet revealed that Mirren had initially hesitated to join the cast. She explained: When I told her about the film, she said, I have two personal rules: I will not portray anyone with dementia or cancer.

Despite her reservations, Mirren requested the script and later emailed Winslet to say she was willing to break her own rule because she found the project so compelling.

Winslet described working on Goodbye June with her son as an unforgettable experience. She said, My wonderful son wrote it after taking a screenwriting course. He was encouraged to write from the heart, inspired by a deeply personal losshis grandmother passed away when he was 13. When I read it, I knew we had to make this film. At 50, I became a director, and it was an extraordinary journey.

The actress also briefly addressed her involvement in the third Avatar installment, mentioning that she was again performing underwater scenes, which included fighting sequences, but did not provide further details.

Goodbye June is set to premiere in UK cinemas on December 12, followed by streaming availability on Netflix on Christmas Eve. The full interview with Winslet can be watched on The Graham Norton Show on BBC One and iPlayer.
