Sydney Sweeney Admits to Self-Blame for Parents' Divorce

Actress Sydney Sweeney recently shared insights into the emotional burden she experienced as a teenager while her family dealt with financial difficulties and a divorce. Speaking on a recent podcast, Sweeney discussed how deeply she internalized her parents challenges while pursuing an acting career.

During the December 1 episode of The Hollywood Reporters Awards Chatter podcast, the Christy star described her familys relocation from Spokane, Washington, to Los Angeles during her youth. She explained how she immersed herself in every opportunity that could help advance her acting resume.

I was doing everything I could to build my resume, make connections, and ensure my parents didnt give up on me, Sweeney said. Although she enjoyed aspects of childhood, she admitted that she faced responsibilities beyond what most children her age experienced.

Coming from a small town to L.A., the cost of living was overwhelming compared to what I was used to, noted the Anyone But You actress. The transition created mounting stress for her family, including her father losing his job and escalating financial pressure.

By the time I was 16, my family had filed for bankruptcy and divorce. I felt responsible because I had brought them to the city and changed their lives, and I carried that guilt for years, Sweeney revealed.

Although she appeared in series such as Heroes and Criminal Minds as early as 2009, Sweeneys major breakthrough came almost a decade later with roles in Everything Sucks! and Sharp Objects. During her teenage years, she believed achieving success could help heal her parents relationship.

I placed immense pressure on myself to succeed and accomplish everything, thinking I could restore what was broken, Sweeney explained.
