At Thursday nights IndieWire Honors, Vinny Thomas delivered an opening monologue that was equal parts humor and advocacy, spotlighting Hollywoods often-overlooked actors of data. With his signature dry wit and playful sarcasm, Thomas brought attention to these digital performers in a way only he could.
I completed my studies magna cum laude at the London Academy for Delicate Boys, earning a PhD in nuanced glances, Thomas quipped at the start. But lets shift gears! Beyond hosting, I am an advocate, and tonight I want to highlight a group frequently misrepresented: AI actors, also called actors of data. Many here seem to think theyre taking roles from human performers, but thats simply not true. Some roles clearly belong to AI, yet humans often claim them instead.
He continued, referencing pop culture examples: Take Wall-E, voiced by a human rather than AI. Scarlett Johansson in 'Ghost in the Shell'? Human again. Even Optimus Prime, a robot civil rights icon, was brought to life by a mammal. Looking around this room, all I see are peopleand thats the problem. Lets push for change.
The winter edition of IndieWire Honors celebrated a diverse lineup of talents, including Adam Sandler, Kristen Stewart, Chase Infiniti, Jacob Elordi, Mike Hill, Wagner Moura, Nina Hoss, Mona Fastvold, Ryan White, Autumn Durald Arkapaw, Chris Appelhans, Maggie Kang, and EJAE. Thomas reflected on the essence of both activism and the IndieWire spirit.
Many are curious about my compensation, he said. I declined payment and asked that funds instead go to support a worthy cause. After this, $25 will be donated to the cast of Wicked for Good.
Now, onto IndieWire itself. Scholars trace its name to the Greek indiephagataa, meaning strange movie. This ceremony honors 13 artists dedicated to creating bold, original storytelling.
Chase Infiniti, recipient of the Breakthrough Award for her performance in Paul Thomas Andersons One Battle After Another, was highlighted by Thomas. Chase held her own alongside Oscar winners, enduring a physically and mentally demanding role, emerging as a true future star of Hollywood.
The evening concluded with an intimate reception and awards ceremony in Los Angeles, marking a night of celebration for filmmakers, actors, and creatives pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling.
