When will the December supermoon occur in 2025?

The final full moon of 2025, known as the Cold Moon, is set to appear in the night sky in just a few days. November's Beaver Moon reached its peak at 8:19 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, marking one of several supermoons closing out the year. Over recent months, stargazers have witnessed the Harvest Moon along with a series of other notable celestial events.

When Will the Next Full Moon Occur?

The December Cold Moon will reach its maximum brightness on Dec. 4 at 6:14 p.m., according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. The most striking views are expected just after moonrise, when the moon appears larger on the horizon. This December full moon is also the third and final supermoon of the year.

A supermoon happens when a full or new moon coincides with the moons closest approach to Earth, known as perigee. During this time, the moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. Typically, supermoons occur three or four times per year in consecutive months. In 2025, they appeared in September, October, November, and now December.

The Biggest Supermoon of the Year

November's supermoon stood out as the largest and brightest of the year, appearing 7.9% bigger and 16% brighter than a standard full moon, according to Star Walk.

Meteor Showers in December 2025

December also brings the Geminid meteor shower, described by the Old Farmer's Almanac as "one of the years most active and reliable meteor showers." Meteors can be seen throughout the night, with peak viewing around 2 a.m. As the sun sets early in December, the shower is often fully visible by 9 p.m.

Why the Cold Moon?

The name "Cold Moon" originates from Native American traditions, reflecting the frigid temperatures typical of December. UNC Asheville Associate Professor of Astronomy Britt Lundren emphasizes the importance of recognizing the cultural diversity behind these names. Each tribes moon name reflects the seasonal changes in their environment.

The Cold Moon is specifically attributed to the Mohawk tribe. Other traditional full moon names include:

  • September: Corn Moon (Harvest Moon in 2024)
  • October: Hunter Moon (Harvest Moon in 2025)
  • Dakota: Moon When the Deer Shed Their Antlers

The monthly moon names provide a glimpse into the natural rhythms observed by various Native American tribes, connecting celestial events with seasonal cycles.
