51 Video Game Movies Currently in Development: Which Ones Will Actually Be Released?

Hollywood continues to chase trends that could become the next cultural phenomenon, and video game movies are part of that pursuit. While the history of adaptations has been rocky, recent successes show a shift in quality and ambition. The Super Mario Bros. Movie dominated the box office, while Uncharted and the Sonic the Hedgehog films also performed well, signaling renewed interest in translating games to the big screen.

Numerous projects are underway, though many remain stuck in early development. Below is a snapshot of video game movies in various stages of production.

Elden Ring

A live-action adaptation of Elden Ring is in development with A24, written and directed by Alex Garland. George R. R. Martin is producing, contributing to the lore of the game.

Helldivers

Announced at CES 2025, Helldivers is a Sony and Columbia Pictures project inspired by Starship Troopers. Justin Lin will direct, with plans for over-the-top action and celebrity cameos.

The Mortuary Assistant

Production has begun on this indie horror adaptation, directed by Jeremiah Kipp and starring Willa Holland, aiming to expand on the game's universe.

Watch Dogs

Filming began in July for this Ubisoft adaptation, directed by Mathieu Turi, featuring Tom Blyth and Sophia Wilde. Post-production is now underway.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4

Following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Paramount confirmed a sequel, set to release March 19, 2027.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The sequel to Super Mario Bros. adapts the 2007 Wii game, returning cast members, and will premiere in April 2026.

Death Stranding

A live-action adaptation of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding is in progress with A24, alongside an adult-targeted animated version written by Aaron Guzikowski.

Call of Duty

Paramount is producing a live-action adaptation of Call of Duty, aiming to stay true to the game's narrative and style, with Taylor Sheridan involved in writing.

The Legend of Zelda

A live-action movie co-produced by Nintendo and Sony is set for May 7, 2027, starring Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
