"Bernie Kopell, from "Love Boat", remembers harsh review predicting failure before show's success: 'It's Going to Sink Like the Titanic' (Exclusive)

Bernie Kopell, now 92, recently shared his memories with PEOPLE during Princess Cruises Love Boat Celebration at Sea. The actor reflected on the initial skepticism surrounding the series, which required three pilot episodes before it finally aired and faced harsh early reviews. He recalled, "The first review we got from this critic at the LA Times said, 'It's going to sink like the Titanic.'"

Despite its rocky start, the show has left a lasting impact. Fans continue to express their affection for the cast, with Kopell mentioning, "I got a lovely letter from Germany."

Looking back on landing the role of Dr. Adam Bricker, Kopell described his experience as a mix of excitement and anxious anticipation. After months of waiting following his audition, he finally received the news from his agent: "You got the part!" he recalled with enthusiasm.

Kopell has been deeply moved by the ongoing admiration from fans. He shared an anecdote about a doctor on one of the cruises who told him, "[You] stand by your patients, and you're kind to them and you're helpful and you're competent." Kopell laughed, adding, "It's in the script. I have to be that way."

Regarding the creation of Dr. Brickers character, Kopell recounted how his name came about during late-night discussions on set. "There were talks about naming this guy. He chases the ladies, so we couldnt keep the original name with a Pwe changed it to a B," he explained.

The reunion event brought together stars Lauren Tewes, Fred Grandy, Jill Whelan, Ted Lange, and recurring guest Charo, creating a memorable experience for fans. Kopell reflected on the strong bond among the cast, saying, "We became the second family to each other."
