The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust will host a special presentation of the film Hamnet to mark its UK release this January. The historical drama, featuring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, adapts Maggie O'Farrell's acclaimed novel that imagines the lives of William Shakespeares wife and son.
The event is a collaboration between the Trust and Everyman Cinema, including both a film screening and a pre-show Q&A session with invited guests. It will be held at the Stratford-upon-Avon Everyman Cinema on 9 January, with further event details to be released soon.
Hamnet portrays love and grief in the lives of Anne Hathawayreferred to as Agnes in the storyand Shakespeare. Directed by Oscar-winner Chlo Zhao, the film explores the profound effect of Hamnets death on his parents, which may have influenced one of Shakespeare's most iconic works.
Hamnet Shakespeare, twin sister to Judith, was the only son of Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway. He passed away at age 11 and was laid to rest at Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon on 11 August 1596. Jessie Buckley plays Agnes, while Paul Mescal portrays Shakespeare.
The young couple would have spent time at Shakespeare's family home, now preserved as The Birthplace, while Anne likely brought her children to her own childhood home. Anne Hathaway's Cottage, also under the care of the Trust, offers a glimpse into her rural upbringing.
Rachael North, Chief Executive of the Birthplace Trust, stated: We hope the film encourages visitors to trace the footsteps of Anne, William, and Hamnet, experiencing the love and loss central to their story. Maggie O'Farrell drew inspiration from visiting the Birthplace, and we aim to provide moments that are both inspiring and revealing for all our guests.
She added: The film not only tells the Shakespeare family story but also brings historical sites like the cottage to life. It emphasizes the human side of William and Anne, and seeing this on the big screen will be extraordinary.
Martin Simms, sector lead at Production Central WM, praised Zhaos adaptation as brilliant and noted it highlights the West Midlands creative heritage. He added that Production Central WM will continue to connect industry professionals with the regions historic locations, facilities, and creative talent, bringing stories like Hamnet to audiences worldwide.
