Even five years after its cancellation and following her Academy Award win, Da'Vine Joy Randolph remains enthusiastic about High Fidelity. The award-winning actress, currently promoting her role in the sci-fi rom-com Eternity, recently spoke to Rolling Stone about the possibility of bringing the series back.
When asked if she would consider returning to the show, Randolph responded without hesitation: Absolutely. We all feel the same way. Zo [Kravitz] and I often discuss ithow can we bring it back to the fans, but also for ourselves, because we truly love it.
The 2020 series, a modern and gender-swapped reinterpretation of the John Cusack film, aired for just one season on Hulu before its unexpected cancellation. At the time, Randolphs career was gaining momentum with performances in Dolemite Is My Name and The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Within a few years, she earned an Academy Award for her work in The Holdovers.
Although Randolph has several projects lined up, she is open to reprising her role as Cherise, the witty music store employee. However, she acknowledges the challenges of returning: Its tricky because youre trying to recapture lightning in a bottle. Sometimes you have to let things unfold organically and trust the process to discover whats next.
High Fidelity, based on Nick Hornbys 1995 novel and the 2000 film, follows Robyn Rob Brooks (Zo Kravitz), a Brooklyn record store owner navigating her past failed relationships. The series received praise from both critics and fans, making its cancellation surprising, especially since Hulu does not release viewership numbers. The finale left audiences on a cliffhanger with Rob facing a significant romantic decision.
Over the years, Kravitz has shared her frustration about the abrupt ending and her desire to continue the story. Thats where I really learned about producing, editing, and writing. Im sad about it. I keep approaching Hulu to revive it, but theyre not interested,
she told Elle earlier this year.
In her Rolling Stone interview, Randolph reflected on the pressure of playing a role originally portrayed by Jack Black. I avoided watching the movie because Im such a fan of Jack Black. I wanted my performance to be authentically me, but I did feel the pressure knowing people would have expectations from the original.
She added that the shows unique approach contributed to its success: Being so different helped High Fidelity thrive. But thats rare. Often, I see sequels or remakes decades later and wonder, 'Do we really need this?'
