Director Guillermo del Toro shoots all scenes with Jacob Elordi's Creature and Mia Goth's Elizabeth at a higher frame rate, enhancing emotional impact

Director Guillermo del Toro has shared that he employed a different frame rate for the sequences featuring Jacob Elordi as the Creature and Mia Goth as Elizabeth, which contributes to the heightened emotional connection viewers are experiencing between the characters.

In a Twitter post, del Toro explained: "I filmed all their shared scenes at 36 frames per second so I could either slow down specific gestures, like the flutter of a moth on a wedding dress, or accelerate moments, such as her trembling face while wearing gloves. This allows each emotional beat to resonate more vividly."

Elizabeth, engaged to Victor Frankenstein's brother William but also the object of Victor's affection, is among the few characters who show compassion toward the Creature, especially during his early days when Victor keeps him chained in the basement beneath his laboratory.

While most films are shot at 24 frames per second, del Toro's decision to use 36 frames per second for the Creature and Elizabeth's scenes introduces a subtle visual differentiation and reveals previously unnoticed details in their interactions.

The movie, inspired by Mary Shelley's classic 19th-century Gothic novel, features Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein. Alongside Elordi and Goth, the ensemble cast includes Christoph Waltz, David Bradley, Charles Dance, Ralph Ineson, and Lars Mikkelsen.

Frankenstein is currently available for streaming on Netflix. To explore more, consider adding other recommended films to your watchlist.
