The press got a first glimpse of Avatar: Fire and Ash on Monday, and initial responses indicate that James Cameron may be on track for yet another billion-dollar blockbuster. While official critic reviews are under embargo until the films release on December 19, 20th Century Studios permitted media outlets to share reactions on social media from the early screenings.
Returning Faces and New Additions
The third installment in the Avatar saga takes audiences back to Pandora following the events of 2022s Avatar: The Way of Water, introducing the Ash clan, a fire-themed Navi group. Regular cast members include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaa, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, and Giovanni Ribisi. Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis also return, reprising their roles from the previous film.
New faces joining the cast are Oona Chaplin as Varang, the leader of the volcanic Mangkwan clan, and David Thewlis as Peylak, the leader of the Wind Traders.
Box Office Outlook
Given Camerons track record and Avatars enduring cultural impact, the prospects for Fire and Ash appear strong. Yet, it will need remarkable performance to match the staggering earnings of its predecessors. The original Avatar (2009) remains the highest-grossing film of all time with over $2.9 billion worldwide, while 2022s The Way of Water earned $2.34 billion despite post-pandemic theater challenges. Avatar: Fire and Ash will be followed by Avatar 4 in 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031.
