Sky has released the official trailer for Gomorrah The Series: The Origins, a prequel to the acclaimed Neapolitan crime drama Gomorrah, Italys most successful TV export. The six-part series, premiering on Skys pay-TV platform in Italy in January (exact date TBA), explores the early life of mob boss Pietro Savastano.
Set in the 1970s, the story follows Pietro, portrayed by 16-year-old Naples native Luca Lubrano, before he became the feared head of the Savastano crime family seen in the original show. The series charts his journey from a poor street child in the Naples neighborhood of Secondigliano to his first encounters with organized crime.
The trailer depicts Pietros early years beginning in 1977. Growing up as an adopted child in harsh conditions, he hustles to improve his circumstances while navigating adolescence, first love, and the challenges of loyalty to his friends and brothers. His introduction to the criminal world occurs when he meets Angelo, nicknamed A Sirena, the influential mob leader of Secondigliano. As the series synopsis notes, Amid violence, alliances, and betrayals, Pietro learns the costs of this life firsthand.
Direction of the prequel is led by Marco DAmore, who portrayed Ciro Di Marzio in the original series. Producer Riccardo Tozzi shared that DAmore drew inspiration from Sergio Leones Once Upon a Time in America, a tale of childhood friends rising to gangster power in 1920s New York. Tozzi emphasized that while it carries the signature Gomorrah essence, the prequel presents a distinct story and atmosphere, offering another narrative, another world.
Unlike the modern, hyper-realistic portrayal of Naples in Gomorrah, the prequel showcases a stylized, almost dreamlike version of the city. Production is handled by Sky Studios and Cattleya (part of ITV Studios), with international distribution by Beta Film.
The original Gomorrah ran for five seasons from 2014 to 2021 and reached audiences in 190 countries, including a U.S. release on HBO Max. The prequel is expected to debut across Skys European markets, including the U.K. and Germany, in early 2026.
