Kayce Dutton is set to headline his own Yellowstone spinoff, Y: Marshals, yet viewers are focused on the noticeable absence of his wife, Monica. Since its 2018 premiere, Yellowstone has chronicled the lives of the Dutton family, owners of Montanas largest ranch. Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille) were central to the show, and their relationship, along with raising their son Tate (Brecken Merrill), remained a key storyline until the series concluded in 2024.
Grimes reflected on the end of his role, telling People in June, On the last day of shooting, I thought it was my last day as Kayce. It was over to me. Seven years of playing someone Ill never see again, except for having his hat and jacket in my closet. A few months later, the spinoff idea started taking shape.
He described leaving the show as unexpectedly emotional. It was bigger than I imagined. Saying goodbye felt like losing a family, Grimes said. Both cast and crew were reluctant to end the series, and fans shared that sentiment.
Later in 2024, CBS ordered Y: Marshals, giving Kayce a fresh storyline. Promotional material highlights Kayce, but Monicas absence has sparked curiosity. The spinoff, premiering March 2026, follows Kayce as he transitions from ranching to joining an elite U.S. Marshals unit. Combining his cowboy skills with his Navy SEAL training, he faces complex challenges while balancing duty, family, and the psychological toll of law enforcement in Montana.
Monica, a former teacher turned Montana State University professor, previously shared life with Kayce on the Yellowstone Ranch and endured challenges alongside him. After his father Johns death, Kayce inherited the ranch, leaving the couple together at the end of the original series.
The cast of Y: Marshals includes Grimes, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brett Cullen, and Logan Marshall-Green. Trailers show Kayce navigating past traumas and new responsibilities, yet Monica is not shown. A wedding ring on Kayces finger hints he may still be married or could be a widower. Asbilles involvement in the spinoff remains unconfirmed.
Before Yellowstone concluded, Asbille commented on the couples future, saying, There are hurdles in marriage, but theyve always been endgame for each other. Theyve worked hard to build a family and a home. Grimes expressed support for a potential storyline featuring both characters but remained tight-lipped about Monicas role in Y: Marshals. We wanted a real, interesting, and believable story, he told People. Its very engaging and I think it will captivate the audience.
The spinoff premieres March 1, 2026. Meanwhile, other Yellowstone-related projects are underway: Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser star in The Dutton Ranch, Paramount+ will release 6666 focused on the Four Sixes Ranch, and prequel 1944 is in development. Creator Taylor Sheridan has a five-year overall deal with NBCUniversal, with 1944 scheduled to premiere January 1, 2029.
