Jodie Foster has expressed that Martin Scorseses 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon might have been more effective as an extended eight-hour streaming series rather than the three-and-a-half-hour theatrical release. The Academy Award-winning actress shared her thoughts during a live conversation at the Marrakech Film Festival, where she was honored with a tribute award.
Foster reflected on the evolution of storytelling in cinema and the rise of streaming platforms, referencing her experience on True Detective. She highlighted that streaming allows creators to explore complex narratives that traditional movies often cannot accommodate. Streaming enables us to do things that mainstream films cant anymore. Real narrative today in the U.S. is happening on streaming. Movie theaters show blockbuster superhero franchises, but the deeper, real stories are on streaming, she said.
She elaborated on the current landscape, contrasting mainstream Hollywood productions with independent films and streaming content. According to Foster, streaming provides opportunities for long-form storytelling, such as multi-episode or multi-season arcs, allowing a fuller exploration of characters and events. She used Scorseses adaptation of David Granns account of the Osage murders in 1920s Oklahoma as an example, suggesting it would have benefited from a longer serialized format. He aimed to depict Native American experiences of the era, but the finished film focused mainly on interactions between two characters, she noted, referencing Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niros roles.
Foster added that a limited series could have offered space to explore different perspectives, including the broader impact on Native communities and themes of toxic masculinity, which the feature format could not fully capture. Despite her critique, her comments were not critical of Scorsese personally; she emphasized her admiration for his work and expressed hope that he would pursue more high-end drama in the future, referencing his 2016 series Vinyl. Im eager to see him embrace this form even more. He has so much to offer, and long-form storytelling could be a perfect avenue for his talents, she said.
During the discussion, Foster also shared insights from her early acting career. She recalled being initially disillusioned with acting before her role in Taxi Driver, which she described as a transformative experience. Foster recounted how Robert De Niro mentored her, introducing her to improvisation and helping her understand the deeper craft of character-building. It was a revelation. I realized that acting wasnt just about reciting linesit was about creating a full character, she said, describing the excitement and realization that shaped her approach to the craft.
