Jodie Foster's Initial Impression of Robert De Niro: 'Really Uninteresting'

During a recent appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival, Jodie Foster opened up about her experience collaborating with Robert De Niro on the iconic film Taxi Driver, describing him as uninteresting in personal interactions. Despite this, she acknowledged De Niros legendary status in American cinema, calling him one of the greatest American actors.

First Impressions of De Niro

Foster, known for her role in The Silence of the Lambs, explained that De Niro remained fully in character even off set while preparing for scenes. Wed go over lines multiple times, she recalled. Hes one of our greatest actors, and Im proud to have worked with him, but hes not the most interesting person in everyday conversation.

De Niros Immersive Method

The Oscar-winning actress elaborated that De Niros deep immersion in his role initially made their interactions dull. She remembered lunches where she felt disconnected: I would be wondering, What is happening? When can I go home? and end up talking to the waiters instead of him.

Understanding the Craft

Over time, Foster came to appreciate De Niros approach. By their third lunch together, he introduced her to improvisation techniques, giving her new insight into acting. I remember being thrilled, sweaty, and giggling, and running back to my hotel room to tell my mom, Ive had this epiphany. From that moment, everything changed, she shared.

Fosters Breakthrough Role

In Taxi Driver (1976), Foster portrayed Iris Steensma, a 12-year-old child prostitute. Her performance earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, marking a significant milestone in her career.
