NeNe Leakes, the standout star of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," has become one of the most recognizable personalities in reality television. Known for her unforgettable quotes and viral moments, Leakes has expanded her career to scripted TV and Broadway, while giving significant credit to the LGBTQ+ community for her rise.
Reflecting on Her Legacy
During a night out at The Abbey, a popular West Hollywood gay venue, Leakes spoke with Gayety about her career and the lasting influence of her early "RHOA" moments. She noted how phrases from the show, like "white refrigerator" and "Ooh, child, the ghetto," continue to trend on TikTok and Instagram Reels years later. "Its crazy to me," she said. "People are still saying these things years after they first aired."
Gratitude Toward the LGBTQ+ Community
Leakes reflected on how the LGBTQ+ community has played a pivotal role in amplifying her iconic lines. "It means the world to me," she said. "Without the gay community, Im not sure these sayings would have traveled as far. They were snapping and saying, Yes, Ms. Nene! and taking it to another level."
Since "RHOA" premiered in 2008, Leakes has been amazed that her moments from nearly two decades ago are still celebrated. "It means I am an icon and legendary," she added.
Longtime Ally of the LGBTQ+ Community
Leakes has openly expressed her admiration for queer fans throughout her career. In 2015, she told HuffPost about her connection to the community, noting that she grew up around gay friends and has always enjoyed supporting them. "They influence everything, from nail polish to high heels to lip gloss," she said. "Ive been a supporter for a very long time, and I make it a point to participate in Pride whenever I can."
Controversy Over Comments About Trans Women
Despite her support, Leakes faced criticism in 2025 after a podcast episode with trans activist TS Madison went viral. The discussion centered on men who date trans women, and some of Leakes' comments were deemed outdated by social media users. Madison clarified that many men, including pansexual men, are attracted to trans women, while Leakes expressed personal discomfort with certain situations.
Social media responses highlighted generational differences, with one user noting her "takes ... outdated" and emphasizing the importance of educational conversations. Madison later confirmed that there was no personal conflict, framing the discussion as a dialogue about dating and attraction rather than a confrontation. "Fighting with NeNe Leakes? Over MY identity? Two people sitting down discussing attractions and dating was fighting? Uhhhh okay," she wrote.
