'Peepli Live' Director Anusha Rizvi Makes a Comeback with Family Comedy ‘The Great Shamsuddin Family’ for JioHotstar (EXCLUSIVE)

Renowned Indian filmmaker Anusha Rizvi, known for her celebrated work on Peepli Live, is back in the directors chair with a new feature titled The Great Shamsuddin Family. This comedy-drama delves into the intricacies of contemporary Indian family life.

The story follows Kritika Kamra as Bani Ahmed, a writer facing a crucial 12-hour deadline, whose apartment becomes the epicenter of a family emergency. The film features a strong ensemble including Purab Kohli, Farida Jalal, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Juhi Babbar, Sheeba Chaddha, Dolly Ahluwalia, Natasha Rastogi, and Nishank Verma.

Set entirely in Delhi over the course of one hectic day, the plot unfolds as mothers, aunts, cousins, and former lovers descend upon Banis home, each carrying their own crises. Amid interfaith challenges, generational disagreements, and family obligations, Bani faces the difficult decision of pursuing international career prospects or staying with her family.

At its heart, the film isnt just about interruptions; its about how family, even at its most challenging, shapes who we are, said Rizvi. Through Banis chaotic day, I hope viewers see reflections of their own mothers, aunts, siblings, and that one relative who always arrives at the wrong moment but with the best intentions.

Kamra described Bani as the responsible eldest daughter in a middle-income family, always putting others before herself. Shes quietly dependable, endlessly responsible, and longs for a single day to focus on her own dreams, the actor explained.

For Shreya Dhanwanthary, the film represents a shift from her previous serious roles. She plays Banis impulsive younger sister who relies on her elder sibling during crises.

Sheeba Chaddha highlighted the movies single-location setting: All the humor, conflicts, and emotions unfold under one roof, creating a world that is both intimate and highly entertaining.

Purab Kohli noted that the production acts as a mirror to typical Indian family life. Thats exactly what makes it relatable and heartwarming, he said.

The Great Shamsuddin Family is set to premiere on December 12 on JioHotstar, Indias leading streaming platform.
