The beloved Paddington movie series, based on Michael Bond's classic character from 1958, continues to enchant audiences. But which installment stands out as the ultimate favorite?
The story of Paddington Bear, a kind-hearted bear from darkest Peru who travels to London as a stowaway, is widely known. Once in London, Paddington finds refuge at Paddington Station, where the Brown family discovers him. They name him Paddington since his original Peruvian bear name is incomprehensible to humans. Although initially hesitant about housing a talking bear, the Browns soon embrace Paddington, who brings both chaos and joy to their lives and to the city around them.
Across three films, with Ben Whishaw voicing Paddington, directors Paul King and Dougal Wilson chronicle his adventures from Peru to London and back. These movies are consistently charming, humorous, and enjoyable for viewers of all ages. Heres a ranking of all three films, from least to most successful.
3. Paddington in Peru (2024)
The third film, Paddington in Peru, faced numerous obstacles before release. Due to scheduling conflicts with the "Wonka" film, original director Paul King stepped down, and Dougal Wilson took over, marking his feature film debut. Sally Hawkins, who portrayed Mary Brown in the first two films, was replaced by Emily Mortimer.
In this installment, Paddington takes the Browns to Peru, introducing them to his birthplace while trying to keep the family united. However, the change of setting removes much of the charm of Paddington being a fish out of water in London. Wilsons direction lacks the whimsical touch of Kings previous films, and Mortimers casting feels distracting. Overall, while not a complete failure, this film is the weakest of the trilogy.
2. Paddington (2014)
The original Paddington film, directed by Paul King, remains the foundation of the franchise. Featuring Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins as the Browns, the movie captures why Paddington quickly becomes part of the family after being found at the station. Complications arise when the villainous Millicent Clyde (Nicole Kidman) plots to capture and taxidermy Paddington, assisted by neighbor Mr. Curry (Peter Capaldi).
The film excels with its cast and Kings whimsical direction, including animated elements that bring the Browns home to life. It strikes a perfect balance between entertaining children and engaging adults, establishing the unique charm of the franchise.
1. Paddington 2 (2017)
Paddington 2 is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the series. For a long time, it held a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This sequel follows Paddingtons life in London, disrupted when he accidentally humiliates actor Phoenix Buchanan (Hugh Grant). Phoenix schemes to frame Paddington for theft of a rare pop-up book meant for Aunt Lucy.
Despite the plot involving prison, Paddingtons kindness wins over fellow inmates, including the stern chef Knuckles McGinty (Brendan Gleeson). Together with the Browns, Paddington foils Phoenixs plan, leading to a heartfelt conclusion and a playful post-credits moment. Hugh Grant delivers a career-highlight performance, and the film combines humor, warmth, and excitement, making it the best of the trilogy.
From charming beginnings to Peruvian misadventures, the Paddington films continue to offer heartwarming tales for audiences of all ages, with Paddington 2 standing as the undisputed favorite.
