Ryan Murphy has shared his thoughts on how discussions about plastic surgery have evolved since he created the drama series Nip/Tuck. The Emmy-winning producer recalled the early 2000s, when talking about cosmetic procedures was considered highly taboo.
"One of my first major shows was Nip/Tuck, centered on plastic surgery, and I was struck by how forbidden it was to even discuss it," Murphy said. "People altered their appearances and then acted as if nothing had changed. That was the norm back then."
Murphy spoke during a panel at New York Comic Con about his upcoming series The Beauty. He noted that public perception has shifted significantly. "Nowadays, people are more open, sometimes even showcasing their procedures. It's a strange kind of status symbol," he explained.
Nip/Tuck, which aired on FX from 2003 to 2010, followed the personal and professional lives of two plastic surgeons. The series starred Dylan Walsh, Julian McMahon, and Joely Richardson, and was known for its graphic depictions of surgery and complex character dynamics. The show received critical acclaim, earning an Emmy for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup and a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series.
Murphy went on to develop other hit shows including Glee, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and 9-1-1. His latest project, The Beauty, co-created with Matt Hodgson and adapted from the comic series by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, explores a virus that enhances beauty but comes with deadly consequences.
The series features Anthony Ramos, Ashton Kutcher, Evan Peters, Jeremy Pope, and Rebecca Hall. At Comic Con, Murphy described it as combining "amazing action, body horror, a compelling love story, buddy-comedy elements, and a formidable villain." He added, "It blends heightened genres inherent to the source material, making it a thrilling and fun experience to work on."
