Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost are now considered one of Hollywoods most enduring couples. Yet, according to Johansson, their romance almost ended before it even began. During an interview on TODAY with Jenna & Friends, she revealed that she unexpectedly shortened their first date, feeling overwhelmed by the unfamiliar experience of casual dating.
Johansson Reflects on Their Initial Meeting
While speaking on the morning show, Johansson described the moment she unintentionally sent Jost mixed signals. She explained to host Jenna Bush Hager that her history of long-term relationships had left her unaccustomed to traditional dating. Calling herself a serial monogamist, Johansson admitted that being asked out for dinner was a new and somewhat intimidating experience.
The actress, who had been married twice before meeting the Saturday Night Live star, recalled choosing a small Italian restaurant in New Yorks East Village for their first outing. According to Johansson, the date went smoothly: they talked, enjoyed their meal, and seemed to connect effortlessly. The unexpected moment came when Jost suggested continuing the evening with drinks alongside some friends. Surprised, Johansson panicked.
I was just like, Ive got to go now. I need to leave, she said, describing how she abruptly ended the date and went home. Even her babysitter was surprised to see her back so soon, to which she could only reply that she felt flustered and unsure how to handle the invitation.
Despite the awkward ending, Jost did not take offense. Johansson noted that he later assumed she might not be interested. Fortunately, they decided to give their connection another chance, which eventually blossomed into a nearly decade-long relationship and marriage in 2020.
Josts Early Impressions
Colin Jost has also shared his initial impressions of Johansson in his memoir, A Very Punchable Face. He recalled feeling intimidated by her poise when they first met on SNL years earlier. Though he joked about his scruffier appearance at the time, he emphasized how naturally they clicked once they reconnected.
What began as a hesitant first date ultimately developed into one of Hollywoods strongest partnerships.
