Scarlett Johansson Reaffirms Support for Woody Allen
Scarlett Johansson has reiterated her backing of director Woody Allen, despite much of the film industry distancing itself from him following longstanding sexual assault allegations made by his stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow. Johansson, who collaborated with Allen on Match Point, Scoop, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, remains among the few public figures who continue to defend him. The accusations, originally raised in 1992 and revisited during the #MeToo movement, have repeatedly been denied by Allen and dismissed after investigations by New York authorities.
In a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johansson stated, I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime. Speaking recently to The Daily Telegraph, she reflected on whether her loyalty to the filmmaker has had any adverse impact on her personal or professional life, saying it was difficult to determine. She added that her mother had always taught her to value integrity and stand by her beliefs.
Johansson also emphasized that maturity had taught her the importance of recognizing when it is or isnt the right moment to speak, noting that this does not mean silencing oneself, but understanding timing.
The actress further addressed previous controversies involving the entertainment industry, including her objection to a ChatGPT voice release that she said closely resembled her own, as well as her 2021 lawsuit against Disney regarding the streaming-only rollout of Black Widow. She remarked on the lack of public support from fellow actors on these matters, saying the industry would benefit from more collective, outspoken solidarity.
