Scarlett Johansson has reaffirmed her backing of director Woody Allen following the resurfacing of sexual abuse allegations made by his daughter in 2019. The 41-year-old actress discussed the impact of publicly supporting the 90-year-old filmmaker in a recent interview with The Telegraph.
When asked if her position six years ago affected her personal or professional relationships, Johansson said: Its difficult to tell. You never really know the ripple effects.
She continued, My mother always encouraged me to remain true to myself, to uphold integrity, and defend my beliefs.
Johansson also reflected on timing and discretion, stating: Its important to recognize when its not your moment. That doesnt mean staying silent, but sometimes patience is necessary. Ive learned that more with experience.
Throughout her career, Johansson has appeared in three of Allens films: Match Point, Scoop, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She was among a small group of Hollywood figures who continued to support Allen amid longstanding allegations he has consistently denied since 1992.
Following the #MeToo movement, Johansson told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019: I care deeply for Woody. I believe his innocence and would work with him anytime. I make it a point to speak with him directly about this, and he is always straightforward with me.
Allens adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, publicly accused him in 2014 of molesting her at age seven during his relationship with her mother, Mia Farrow. Allen denied the allegations, claiming that Mia coached Dylan to make false accusations after their breakup. No criminal charges were ever filed.
Some of Allens collaborators, including Diane Keaton and Javier Bardem, have defended him alongside Johansson, though many others in Hollywood vowed never to work with him again. Controversy was further fueled by Allens marriage to Soon-Yi Previn, Mia Farrows adopted daughter, despite their 35-year age difference.
