Scarlett Johansson has reaffirmed her backing of director Woody Allen despite the long-standing sexual abuse accusations against him. The actress shared her reasoning for continuing to support Allen and reflected on how taking a public stance has influenced her career.
Johansson Discusses Her Position
Johansson has consistently stood by Allen over the years. In a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said, I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime. She reiterated this position in a recent interview with The Telegraph, noting, You never know what the domino effect is, exactly, when discussing the consequences of her public support. She also mentioned, My mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that its important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in.
The Controversy Surrounding Allen
Woody Allen, 90, has faced allegations since 1992 when Dylan Farrow, the adopted daughter of Allen and Mia Farrow, accused him of molestation. Allen has consistently denied the claims, and the New York Department of Social Services investigated and dismissed them. In 2014, Farrow restated the accusations in a letter published by The New York Times. Allen responded in a CBS interview, saying, I believe she thinks it. She was a good kid. I do not believe that shes making it up. I dont believe shes lying. I believe she believes that.
Collaboration and Trust
Johansson worked with Allen on three films: Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006), and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). She emphasized, Hes very direct with me. He maintains his innocence, and I believe him. Despite criticism, Johansson has not expressed regret for supporting the director. She clarified, I think its also important to know when its not your turn. I dont mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes its just not your time.
Industry Perspective
Other actors, including Diane Keaton and Sean Penn, have previously defended Allen. Johanssons continued defense is notable in Hollywood, where many former collaborators have distanced themselves from Allen following the resurgence of allegations during the #MeToo movement.
