In 2019, Scarlett Johansson faced widespread criticism after publicly expressing support for filmmaker Woody Allen, who has long been accused of sexually abusing his daughter, Dylan Farrow. Allen has consistently denied these allegations.
At the time, Scarlett stated, I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime. She added that she often spoke directly with Allen about the accusations, emphasizing that she trusted his denials.
Her remarks triggered a significant backlash, as many other actors were using their platforms to criticize Allen.
In a later interview with The Gentlewoman, Scarlett reflected on this period of her career, describing some of her actions as embarrassing and acknowledging that public scrutiny can be difficult. She admitted that she sometimes realized she had been inconsiderate or hadnt seen the bigger picture, emphasizing her growth over time.
Recently, Scarlett, now recognized as one of the highest-grossing lead actors following the success of Jurassic World Rebirth, addressed whether her past defense of Allen impacted her life or career. Speaking to The Telegraph, she said, Its hard to know. You never know what the domino effect is exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, to have integrity, and to stand up for what I believe in.
She also reflected on timing, noting, Sometimes its just not your time. And thats something Ive understood more as Ive matured.
Online reactions to Scarletts comments were mixed. Some expressed disappointment, while others pointed out that her career continues to thrive, noting her leading role in the latest Jurassic Park installment.
Scarletts full interview can be read on The Telegraph.
