Simon Cowell admits to 'being a jerk' on “American Idol”: 'What can I say? I'm sorry'

Simon Cowell became infamous for his brutally honest critiques on American Idol, where from 2002 to 2010 he intimidated aspiring singers with his candid feedback. While he understands why viewers may have disliked him, he offered insight into his intentions.

"I wasnt trying to be mean on purpose," Cowell shared in a recent interview with the New York Times. "The goal was always to discover talented artists to sign. When someone couldnt sing, we would point it out immediately'You can't sing.' We werent saying, 'Youre destined for greatness.'"

Although Cowell admits that his blunt style sometimes went too far, he recognized the impact it had on contestants and audiences. "I realized at times I probably crossed a line," he said. "Audition days were long and repetitive, and I would get frustrated. Even if I made many positive comments, clips would always highlight my bad moments. I get that. Ive apologized for just being harsh."

Some of the most memorable moments occurred during auditions, such as his criticism of William Hungs viral rendition of "She Bangs" in 2004. Cowell described it as "grotesque," prompting Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson to intervene. Reflecting on his earlier behavior, he admitted, "Im not proud of it. When I see those clips, I think, 'Oh, God.' Yet, it undeniably contributed to the shows global popularity."

After American Idol, Cowell judged on programs including The X Factor and Americas Got Talent, where he has softened his approach, showing more emotion and appreciation for performances. As a father and stepfather, Cowell acknowledges he has matured over time, especially while raising his 11-year-old son, Eric, with fiance Lauren Silverman.

Cowells next project, Simon Cowell: The Next Act, follows him forming a new boy band and is set to premiere on Netflix on December 10.
