Stranger Things Season 5 Attempts to Improve Netflix Show's Least Favorite Character

The highly anticipated fifth season of Stranger Things launched over the Thanksgiving weekend, delivering the first four episodes of the final chapter on Netflix. In an unexpected twist, the Duffer Brothers revived a fan-favorite character and appear to address one of the series' most debated moments.

Which Character Makes a Comeback?

In Chapter Four: Sorcerer, Hopper (David Harbour) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) continue their mission to infiltrate a secret military facility within the Upside Down. During the season's earlier episodes, Eleven discovered a hidden room she believed contained Vecna, guarded by the enigmatic Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton). The fourth episode finally reveals the true occupant of the room, surprising fans everywhere.

Instead of Vecna, the room holds Kali (Linnea Berthelsen), also known as Eight, the only other surviving test subject from Hawkins Lab introduced briefly in Season 2. Her sudden reappearance raises questions about how long she has been imprisoned and what role she will play throughout the remaining eight episodes.

Kalis Backstory

Kali, marked with the number 008, first appeared in Season 2 during the controversial episode Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister. Set entirely in Chicago, the episode followed Eleven as she sought out Kali, joined her gang, and confronted shared trauma. Many viewers criticized the episode for straying from Hawkins, speculating it was intended as a backdoor pilot for a potential spin-off.

Her return in Season 5 seems to address that narrative gap, providing closure to both the episode and Elevens broader story. While details about Kalis ongoing arc remain unclear, she is expected to play a significant role in the final season.

The Duffer Brothers Speak

Matt Duffer told Entertainment Weekly that Kalis storyline had been a loose end that we had never really resolved. He explained that the team had previously considered bringing her back but lacked a compelling narrative reason. According to Duffer, Kali will be very important to Elevens actions in Season 5 and the groups strategy against Vecna. Her skills in tracking Vecna make her a valuable ally, and she may even redeem herself in the eyes of fans who had previously dismissed her.
