A fresh studio announcement has reignited interest in a major Tom Cruise classic. Fans now have an official date to revisit the legendary movie on the big screen as it nears a milestone anniversary. The re-release is set to debut during a packed franchise-heavy month in 2026.
Top Gun Celebrates 40 Years with Theatrical Re-Release
Paramount has officially scheduled the 40th anniversary theatrical re-release of Top Gun for May 13, 2026. This will be the films fourth significant run in theaters since its original release on May 16, 1986. Previous major re-releases include a 3D edition in February 2013 and another theatrical return in May 2021 ahead of the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
Paramount aims to strengthen its long-term theatrical offerings by bringing Top Gun back in 2026. The re-release will follow Mortal Kombat II on May 8 and precede Disneys The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22. The studio has also announced new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog projects slated for 2028.
Box Office Legacy
During its original 1986 run, Top Gun earned over $357 million worldwide, making it the years highest-grossing film. Directed by Tony Scott, the movie starred Tom Cruise as Lt. Pete Maverick Mitchell. It quickly became a cult favorite and eventually inspired the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which premiered on May 27, 2022, and grossed approximately $1.496 billion globally.
Tribute to Val Kilmer
The 2026 re-release will mark the first major Top Gun theatrical event without Val Kilmer, who portrayed Tom Iceman Kazansky and passed away on April 1, 2025, at age 65. Tom Cruise, Anthony Edwards, and Jennifer Connelly honored Kilmer following the announcement.
Future Plans and Sequel Momentum
Paramount has prioritized Top Gun 3 in its production slate and shared early development details months ago, though cast and production dates are yet to be confirmed. The 40th anniversary screening is expected to build renewed excitement for the franchise after the success of Maverick.
