'Visinema Studios Emphasizes IP-Driven Future for Indonesian Animation at JAFF Market'

Visinema, the Indonesian studio behind Southeast Asias record-breaking animated hit Jumbo, used its platform at JAFF Market to advocate for a stronger focus on long-term intellectual property (IP) creation in the countrys entertainment industry. CEO Herry B. Salim emphasized the need to move beyond one-off projects and urged government backing to help local studios compete on a global scale.

Evergreen IPs are more than just products to sell. They represent a way of storytelling that builds a sustainable creative ecosystem, Salim told Variety. When developing a story, creators should consider the IP potential, not just a single project.

Industry Outlook and Market Insights

At the JAFF Market booth, Salim participated in a mini talkshow about the future of Indonesian cinema. He noted that mainstream film content is increasingly consumed like fast-moving consumer goods (FMGC), reflecting a shift in how audiences engage with entertainment. The way people consume these film products will definitely align with that trend, he added.

Salim stressed that with the rapid growth of the industry, local creators must aim to compete internationally rather than simply consuming foreign content. We use many foreign products, but what do we gain from just consuming them? he questioned, underscoring the importance of developing full-fledged IPs and the need for government support.

Lessons from Malaysia

Salim cited Malaysias animation sector as an example, highlighting the success of government grants provided by the Digital Economy Corporation for digital content production, including animated films. In Malaysia, producing an animated movie comes with partial government funding. How can we grow and compete without similar support? he asked.

Understanding the audience remains a priority. We have to know who our viewers are, Salim added.

Upcoming Projects

At JAFF Market, Visinema also unveiled a teaser for its upcoming feature Na Willa (2026). The film reunites the creative team behind Jumbo and continues the studios signature approach, focusing on themes that resonate with children and the inner child in everyone. Its about storytelling that truly matters, Salim explained.
