CNN's political analyst Harry Enten is warning of potential setbacks for the Republican Party ahead of Tuesdays special election in Tennessees 7th congressional district. Speaking on CNN News Central, Enten emphasized that even a narrow GOP victory could indicate trouble.
This district has historically been a stronghold for Trump, winning by double-digit margins each time he was on the ballot, Enten noted. He highlighted that Trump secured victories in TN-7 by 17 points in 2016, 15 points in 2020, and 22 points in 2024.
Despite the districts Republican leanings, recent polling shows a surprisingly competitive race. An Emerson poll from November 26 found Republican Matt Van Epps, endorsed by Trump, leading Democrat Aftyn Behn by only two points.
Enten pointed out that the prediction market reflects this unexpected closeness. The Democrat has about a 15% chance of winning, which is notable in a district Trump carried by 22 points, he explained. However, there is a higher probability that the GOP candidate wins by less than 10 points, estimated at 68%.
What we are seeing is a substantial shift toward the left. Theres an over 80% likelihood of a double-digit leftward swing, and even a 15% chance that a Democrat could take the seat. That demonstrates the challenging environment Republicans face right now, Enten said.
The contest is being closely watched as Van Epps campaigns with support from the Washington GOP, including appearances with House Speaker Mike Johnson. Meanwhile, Democratic State Representative Aftyn Behn remains competitive, signaling a tighter race than expected.
Enten noted that the leftward movement in Tennessee aligns with broader trends observed in recent special elections. These shifts are not isolated to Tennessee; similar patterns are appearing across congressional districts nationwide, he said.
Looking ahead, Enten suggested that these developments could have major implications for the 2026 midterm elections. Historically, when one party gains momentum in special elections, they have consistently gone on to win the House. If these trends continue, it could spell significant challenges for Republicans in the upcoming midterms, he concluded.
