Europe faces the threat of 'civilizational erasure,' warns US security report

BERLIN A recent U.S. National Security Strategy warns that Europe risks a civilizational collapse if it does not adjust its current path, emphasizing the need for the continent to remain a dependable partner for the United States. The report, published on the White House website, follows a series of statements by U.S. officials challenging long-held assumptions about Europes role in global security.

The document stresses that the United States aims to assist Europe in reversing its current trajectory and collaborate with nations seeking to regain their historical influence.

Meanwhile, Kyiv suffered another deadly attack as Russian missiles and drones struck the city overnight, resulting in civilian casualties. Local authorities reported at least six deaths and thirteen injuries, including a child. The strike caused widespread power outages, and emergency teams rescued 18 people from the debris. Early the next morning, additional missile strikes using Kinzhal and Iskander systems were reported.

The National Security Strategy, issued periodically by the U.S. executive branch, outlines presidential priorities, perceived threats, and strategic objectives. The latest edition includes a foreword highlighting Americas commitment to maintaining its global dominance.

Some sections of the report echo remarks made earlier this year by U.S. Vice President JD Vance in Munich, where he expressed concerns about internal threats within Europe and a perceived departure from values shared with the United States. The strategy reaffirmed the U.S.s strong ties to European nations such as the UK and Ireland, describing their political character as strategically significant.

The report criticizes the European Union for slow economic growth, restrictions on political freedom, suppression of dissent, and migration policies that are allegedly transforming the continent. It warns that if current trends persist, Europe could become unrecognizable within two decades, raising doubts about the future strength of NATO allies.

The document further notes that it is plausible some NATO countries may become majority non-European within a few decades, posing questions about their continued alignment with the alliance.

European leaders have expressed concern over the reports tone. One diplomat, speaking anonymously, called it even harsher than Vice President Vances Munich speech. Despite criticism, European nations continue to depend heavily on U.S. military support while rebuilding their defenses in response to the Russian threat.

The strategy also states that resolving the conflict in Ukraine and restoring strategic stability with Russia aligns with U.S. interests. It criticizes European officials for holding unrealistic expectations about the war in Ukraine and undermining democratic processes to suppress opposition, noting a gap between public desire for peace and government policy.
