Leading Democrat Criticizes DOJ for Selective Use of Facts Following Pipe Bomber Press Conference

Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) voiced strong criticism over the Justice Departments recent announcement of the arrest of a suspected pipe bomber, accusing the agency of highlighting its actions as a major achievement while ignoring deeper issues within law enforcement.

The DOJ revealed on Thursday that 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr., from Virginia, was taken into custody for allegedly placing homemade explosive devices at both the Republican and Democratic National Committee offices on the eve of the 2021 Capitol riot.

Of course, its positive that this individual has been apprehended, Warner acknowledged. However, he quickly added that the DOJs public display of this arrest felt premature and misleading. Its concerning to see them celebrate, especially given that many senior FBI officials across essential divisions have been dismissed for political reasons. In some offices, nearly half of agents working on critical tasks like counter-espionage and cyber investigations have been reassigned to handle immigration cases. Claiming this makes the country safer seems disingenuous, he said.

Warner questioned how much earlier the suspect could have been identified if law enforcement resources hadnt been diverted, and he reminded the public about the January 6 Capitol attack. Being at the Capitol that day, I witnessed firsthand the chaos. Yet, this administration and former President Trump pardoned those involved in the violence, he said, criticizing what he called the DOJs selective use of facts.

Shortly after taking office, Trump granted pardons to roughly 1,500 individuals convicted or charged in connection with the Capitol riot, including participants who assaulted law enforcement officers.

At the press event, Attorney General Pam Bondi placed some blame on the Biden administration, suggesting the case had been neglected for several years. There was no new tip or witness; this is the result of careful investigative and prosecutorial work, Bondi stated.

Assistant FBI Director Dan Bongino highlighted that new forensic evidence was key to solving the case. Bongino, known for hosting a podcast in 2021 that promoted theories about the pipe bombs and riots, claimed that the FBI had identified the suspect years ago but had withheld the information, suggesting a possible inside job.
