President Donald Trump has rescinded almost twice as many Senate nominations as he did in his initial term, amid challenges with candidate vetting and resistance from Republican lawmakers, according to a recent report. Senate records indicate Trump has withdrawn 57 nominations, compared with 22 during the first year of his previous presidency, Politico notes.
Republican senators cited instances where it appeared the White House did not fully ensure nominees could secure Senate approval. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana told Politico, It would appear that some nominees havent been vetted, andsomebody says, Go with them anyways.
A White House official explained that some of the 57 withdrawals were due to a range of factors, including clerical errors, new assignments, or expanded responsibilities in the nominees roles.
One notable example of inadequate vetting involved Paul Ingrassia, a 30-year-old lawyer nominated by Trump to head the Office of Special Counsel. Ingrassias nomination was pulled after a report revealed he had allegedly described himself as having a Nazi streak and used racial slurs in a private chat. At the time, Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated, Hes not gonna pass. A source close to the White House described the vetting process as a nightmare, influenced by personal connections and relationships within decision-making circles.
Since January, over 300 nominees have been confirmed to serve in the administration. The increased pace is partly attributed to a rule change allowing nominations to be confirmed in large groups. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina suggested that this procedural shift might also contribute to the higher number of withdrawals, noting that when you move more quickly and youve got new folks in play, then you are going to run into people who have lifestyle issues.
White House spokesperson Liz Huston emphasized that Trump is appointing highly capable individuals to advance his America First agenda. She stated, Under President Trumps leadership, these appointees are delivering on his core campaign promises in record time, from securing the border, addressing inflation, boosting American energy, and reinstating common-sense policies.
