Schumer Criticizes Trump's Pardon of Ex-Honduras President: Shameful and Dangerous

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) sharply condemned President Donald Trump on Tuesday following the pardon of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernndez. Hernndez, sentenced last year to 45 years in prison for facilitating the shipment of 400 tons of cocaine into the United States, was released from prison on Monday.

During a speech on the Senate floor, Schumer accused Trump of blatant hypocrisy, highlighting the contradiction between the presidents strong stance against international drug trafficking and the decision to pardon one of the worlds most notorious drug lords. Pardoning a major drug trafficker is not just hypocriticalit is reckless and shameful, Schumer stated.

The New York senator described the pardon as a complete contradiction to Trumps declared commitment to combating drug trafficking. You cannot claim to be aggressively targeting drug operations and then release a convicted criminal who facilitated massive cocaine shipments into our country, he emphasized.

Trump had announced Hernndezs pardon in a post on Truth Social, asserting that the former president had been treated very harshly and unfairly according to people Trump respects.

On Sunday, Trump attempted to deflect criticism by suggesting that the decision was influenced by the Honduran public and claimed that it was a Biden setup. I reviewed the facts and agreed with them, Trump told reporters.

Schumers criticism underscores his ongoing clashes with Trump over policies and political actions, particularly regarding drug enforcement and international law. The senator stressed that pardoning Hernndez undermines the United States credibility in fighting global drug trafficking.
