Stephen A. Smith criticizes Trump's claim that affordability is a Democratic 'con job'

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith sharply criticized former President Donald Trump for describing the current affordability challenges as a Democratic con job, accusing him of pretending the issue doesnt exist.

He feels compelled to make this statement because Americans are genuinely worried, Smith said during an appearance on ABCs The View on Thursday. Yet he acts as though theres no problem at all, portraying all of his actions as flawless and extraordinary.

Trump has frequently downplayed public concern over rising living costs, claiming that energy and grocery prices are manageable and suggesting that Democrats are exaggerating the problem.

Democrats excel at certain things, including misleading people with false information, Trump told reporters after the November elections.

In the recent contests, Democrats won several notable races, including gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, surpassing expectations. Analysts attribute these victories in part to the Democratic focus on affordability issues.

Some prominent Republican figures, including Vice President Vance and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), have acknowledged that affordability is an important voter concern. Greene specifically challenged Trumps assertion that grocery prices are declining, stating in November on CNN, Grocery prices remain high. Energy prices are high. She also suggested that the affordability issue contributed to the GOPs recent election setbacks.

Despite these warnings, Trump has continued to minimize the significance of affordability, even as the issue is expected to influence next years midterm elections.

Smith praised Democrats for compelling Trump to address the issue and strategize accordingly. Theyre building momentum, Smith remarked. It will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
