The White House has quietly unveiled President Donald Trumps updated national security strategy, a 33-page report highlighting his America First policy and signaling a significant recalibration of U.S. foreign affairs. The document outlines a move of military priorities within the Western Hemisphere while adopting a notably confrontational approach toward Europe.
Central to the strategy is a reassessment of U.S. military deployments in the Western Hemisphere, aimed at addressing migration, drug trafficking, and the perceived rise of hostile powers in the region. It calls for expanded Coast Guard and Navy operations and supports deploying forces to secure borders and combat cartels, even using lethal force if necessary. This approach is described as a modern extension of the Monroe Doctrine, emphasizing U.S. preeminence in the Americas.
The strategy cites recent military actions against alleged drug trafficking vessels, noting that at least 23 boats have been destroyed with 87 fatalities. Legal scholars and some members of Congress have questioned the legality of these operations.
Regarding Europe, the strategy warns that some nations face the risk of economic decline and even potential civilizational erosion. It suggests that demographic shifts could lead certain NATO members to lose their European identity within decades, raising concerns about the future alignment of these countries with the U.S. The document claims that the war in Ukraine has increased Europes dependence on external powers and criticizes European governments for obstructing U.S.-backed conflict resolution efforts.
The strategy explicitly calls for U.S. engagement in European domestic politics, stating that policy should focus on cultivating resistance to Europes current trajectory within European nations to preserve the continents cultural identity and restore confidence in its civilizational foundations.
European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho noted that leaders had not yet fully reviewed the document and were not in a position to comment.
The strategy also reiterates a desire to limit NATO expansion, echoing past U.S. criticisms of European policies. Vice President JD Vance previously warned in Munich that Europes internal retreat from fundamental values poses the greatest security risk.
On China, the plan promotes a dual-track strategy: containing Beijings global ambitions while sustaining economic ties and preserving stability around Taiwan. It emphasizes reciprocity in trade and reducing U.S. dependence on China, framing these measures as essential to growing the U.S. economy from $30 trillion in 2025 to $40 trillion in the 2030s.
Alliances are presented as tools rather than intrinsic commitments, forming part of a broader strategy that uses unconventional diplomacy, military strength, and economic leverage to manage international conflicts and tensions.
