Cam Newton Causes Controversy with O.J. Simpson Remark on ESPN

Former NFL standout Cam Newton stirred controversy during his appearance on ESPN's First Take on Monday morning. Newton, who officially became a member of the show in 2025, has been a weekly contributor on Stephen A. Smiths program, which broadcasts from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET.

On the show, Newton analyzes recent NFL games and broader league trends. However, his comments about O.J. Simpson during Mondays episode ignited immediate backlash.

While discussing Sundays matchup between the Steelers and the Bills, Newton referenced the late Simpson. The last person to put up this many yards, God rest his soul, was O.J. Simpson, respectfully, Newton said.

Simpson, who passed away in April 2024, was famously accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. He was acquitted in the highly publicized trial, though public opinion about his guilt has remained divided.

NFL Fans React Strongly

Many fans were critical of Newtons use of God rest his soul when referring to a murder suspect. Comments on social media included:

  • OJs soul aint resting. Probably a bit warmer where hes at.
  • Nobody will ever convince me that we dont pay athletes enough money.
  • God rest his soul for allegedly murdering the mother of his children and the waiter at the restaurant, but he knew how to pound the rock. Is this guy serious?! Respectfully.
  • When you dress like a clown, I guess we should expect clown takes.
  • God rest his soul is WILD .

Simpson, who played in the NFL from 1969 to 1979, is widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs in history. He was named league MVP in 1973 and earned five All-Pro selections during his career.
