On Wednesday, Texas A&M's head coach Mike Elko and his staff were fully concentrated on securing the 2026 recruiting class, as all 26 committed athletes officially signed with the Aggies, shaping the future of the program shortly after Elko signed a six-year contract extension to remain in College Station.
Amid the excitement of Early Signing Day, attention turned to the program's offensive leadership. Collin Klein, the current second-year offensive coordinator, is expected to become Kansas State's head coach following the 2025 season, after Chris Klieman is anticipated to retire. This development positions Klein as a top candidate for the Kansas State role.
Klein is remembered as one of Kansas State's standout players, having been a Heisman Trophy finalist during the 2012 season when Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M won the award. His coaching career began at Kansas State, where he served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator from 2017 to 2023, gaining experience before joining Texas A&M.
Over the past two seasons at Texas A&M, Klein's offense, known for its run-heavy and versatile schemes, ranked 20th nationally, averaging over 454 yards per game. Quarterback Marcel Reed posted a career-high 2,932 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and added more than 400 rushing yards with six scores. Klein's success suggests he is ready for a head coaching opportunity.
While Kansas State Athletic Director Gene Taylor reportedly has not yet contacted Klein about the position, the situation is expected to resolve naturally. Klein will continue coaching through Texas A&M's College Football Playoff participation, at least for one game, but a replacement will need to be named soon.
One potential internal candidate is second-year wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins. Wiggins has guided standout transfer receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, served as one of Elkos key recruiters, and previously worked at Alabama as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach under Nick Saban for three seasons. Currently co-offensive coordinator, Wiggins is gaining experience that could make him a seamless choice for Texas A&M's next offensive play-caller.
While this scenario is speculative, it is worth monitoring in the coming weeks as the Aggies prepare for potential staff changes.
