74-year-old man identified as person of interest in San Diego human remains case

Authorities have identified a person of interest after human remains were discovered at a property in San Diego, triggering an active investigation by law enforcement and prosecutors.

The San Diego County District Attorney's Office stated in a release that 74-year-old Dwight William Rhone, who previously lived at the property, is being investigated in connection with the case.

The investigation began when California Highway Patrol detectives suspected human remains might be located at the Southcrest neighborhood property, according to San Diego police.

Rhone is currently in custody and faces charges in the death of a man named Bernardo Moreno. The district attorney's office has not shared additional information regarding the homicide charge.

Authorities, including the FBI, executed a search warrant at the residence on Tuesday, where the remains were recovered. It remains unclear if the remains are from more than one individual, and officials have not disclosed their identities or causes of death.
