'DHS begins immigration sweeps in New Orleans under Operation Catahoula Crunch'

More than 200 federal agents are scheduled to begin a coordinated enforcement effort across New Orleans, as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the launch of Operation Catahoula Crunch. Named after Louisiana's state dog, this initiative is part of the Trump administrations ongoing nationwide campaign targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions.

Greg Bovino, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) commander-at-large, is expected to oversee the operation in New Orleans. "We are here arresting criminals who should not be here," Bovino wrote on X, emphasizing collaboration with state, local, and federal law enforcement partners in Louisiana.

The enforcement actions have previously triggered protests and criticism in cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, North Carolina, sometimes resulting in clashes where federal agents used tear gas to control crowds.

DHS claims that sanctuary policies in New Orleans have allowed immigrants with criminal backgrounds to remain free, posing risks to the community. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the operation will target violent offenders involved in home invasions, armed robbery, grand theft auto, and sexual assault.

Some local leaders have expressed concerns over the approach, arguing that the presence of heavily armed federal agents may instill fear rather than enhance public safety. Representative Troy Carter Sr., D-La., described the operation as "a political stunt wrapped in badges, armored vehicles, and military uniforms" and warned that the forces lack local legal and community knowledge.

New Orleans Mayor-elect Helena Moreno advised residents to be aware of their constitutional rights, while Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry welcomed the federal enforcement, citing concerns over illegal criminal activity in the city.

Bovino suggested on social media that federal immigration enforcement efforts are intensifying and encouraged undocumented immigrants to use the CBP Home app for self-deportation. He has faced criticism following a prior incident in Chicago where he deployed tear gas against protesters without issuing a verbal warning, violating a court order.

The FBI New Orleans Field Office and Louisiana State Police announced a joint effort to protect law enforcement officers and ensure compliance with federal law. Jonathan Tapp, special agent in charge, emphasized that any assaults on officers or interference with federal operations will result in investigation and arrest.
