Dramatic rescue of construction worker who fell 30ft down manhole in New York City

Intense footage has emerged showing the rescue of a construction worker who plunged 30 feet into an open manhole in New York City. The 35-year-old worker fell near West 170th Street in Washington Heights at approximately 8:45 a.m. on November 20, according to an NYPD spokesperson.

Bodycam recordings released by the NYPD display Emergency Service Unit officers securing the area before lowering at least one officer along with a New York City firefighter into the manhole. The footage reveals concerns about rotting rungs on the manhole ladder, which made the descent more hazardous.

Responders wearing reflective vests can be seen coordinating how to safely lower equipment to reach the worker, who had fallen deep below the surface. The rescue operation involved carefully strapping the injured worker to a backboard before lifting him to safety.

EMS transported the man to New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he was treated and released in stable condition, the NYPD reported.

The NYPD shared the dramatic rescue on X, writing: One unexpected drop. One expert rescue. When a construction worker fell through a manhole cover, @NYPDSpecialops ESU secured the scene, worked with @FDNY to safely reach him, and get them medical care.
