Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has received planning permission to construct a state-of-the-art training centre in Billesdon. The Harborough District Council planning committee gave unanimous approval to redevelop the former Leicestershire County Council highways depot located off Gaulby Road.
The 14 million development will feature a multi-storey fire behaviour training unit, a dedicated area for animal rescue exercises, and a simulated motorway for realistic training scenarios.
Chief Fire Officer Callum Faint described the project as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" and a "strategic investment in public safety" during Tuesdays committee meeting.
Leicestershire County Council leader Dan Harrison welcomed the approval, noting that the brownfield site was no longer required by the council and its redevelopment would bring widespread benefits. "This project will serve residents across Leicestershire, and the 1.7 million from the land sale can now be reinvested into essential services," he said.
Site clearance work is expected to commence early next year, with construction following soon after.
